Carbondale, located in south central Illinois, was established as a coal mining town, but is known today as the site of the main campus of Southern Illinois University. The city also offers a number of scenic parks and interesting attractions. At the African American Museum of Southern Illinois, visitors have the chance to learn about outstanding achievements made by African-American citizens through several exhibits. Also worth discovering is the University Museum, where over 50,000 objects and a variety of temporary art exhibits delve into history and culture from around the world. Enjoy a picnic or a hike at Marberry Arboretum, a scenic locale that houses over 20,000 plants. No trip to Carbondale is complete without a visit to the area of Highway 51 by SIU campus often referred to as the Strip, which features an eclectic assortment of shops and restaurants.
